D.Goard Jr's College Football Preview

I love College Football. As big of a sports fan that I am, College Football is something that I can't do without. I love the passion and intensity that it has. It's the only sport where every regular season game means something. You lose and it can cost you a chance at a national title. Well now that College Football is pretty much here, I just wanted to give my take on the upcoming season.

Conference Winners:

SEC- Florida Gators
No surprise here. Considered the best team in the nation by most. The Gators return all 11 starters on a defense that was tough even last year. They lose Percy Harvin but still have plenty of playmakers to go around. Plus I hear they've got a quarterback named Tim Tebow who supposedly can walk on water. Ole Miss has a good team but how will they handle the hype? Georgia will be good, but they lost some great skill players and Alabama lost some guys on the offensive line. LSU could also be a sleeper.

BIG 12- Texas Longhorns
I went back and forth between Texas and Oklahoma for top honors but gave the edge to the Longhorns because of the returning starters on the offensive line. Don't get me wrong, Oklahoma may have more NFL draft prospects than anyone with last year's heisman winner Sam Bradford, TE Jermaine Gresham, and DT Gerald McCoy to name a few. I just think this is Colt McCoy's year. He is one of the most accurate quarterbacks I've ever seen and has great chemistry with his top receiver and best friend Jordan Shipley. Oklahoma State will put up a lot of points this year and WR Dez Bryant may be the best in the country. A sleeper team to watch is Baylor...yes Baylor. They have a outstanding young QB Robert Griffin who has a ton of potential.

ACC- Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
This was by far the hardest prediction. You have as many as 5 teams who have a legitimate chance to win the division. Miami has a lot of talent but are still young. Florida State is too inconsistent. Virginia Tech just lost their top running back for the year, and North Carolina might lack the playmakers that the other schools have. Georgia Tech has that triple option offense and it's very tough to stop. They ran the ball 80% of the time last year yet teams had no answer. They've got 4 or 5 guys that can run the ball effectively. Led RB Jonathan Dwyer who could be a heisman candidate.

PAC-10-USC Trojans
The Trojans have won 7 straight PAC-10 titles and that's my pick until another team shows me otherwise. The fact that they lost 9 players on their defense to the NFL last year, QB Mark Sanchez to the New York Jets and that they are still top 5 in the country is saying something. They decided to start true freshman Matt Barkley who will be a great player, but will have his struggles early on. Oregon has a big game tonight against Boise State and the Cal Bears might make some noise who have RB Jahvid Best and is a legitimate heisman contender. USC is not as mighty as other years, but I still think it's theirs to lose.
Coach Pete Carroll and his USC Trojans will not only finish in the top five of the national rankings, they could still win the AP national championship.

Big Ten- Ohio State Buckeyes
Ok. Since I'm an Ohio native, some might call it a homer pick, but I think the Buckeyes have a good shot. It's a two team race between Ohio State and Penn State. It will most likely come down to their showdown in Happy Valley later this year. A lot of media have picked Penn State, who very well could win the conference, but lost all of their receivers. Darryl Clark is a good quarterback, but he doesn't have anyone to throw to. The Buckeyes lost their starting wide outs, but have some top prospects waiting in the wings in Devier Posey, Lamaar Thomas and Chris Carter's son Duron Carter. It's really all on Terrelle Pryor's shoulders. If he plays well, the sky is the limit. If he doesn't, the Bucks will struggle. Iowa and Michigan State will also be solid. Illinois will put up a ton of points and could surprise, but I wouldn't bet on them.

Big East- South Florida Bulls
This was another toss-up because there are other teams in the conference capable of winning. Cincinnati lost a lot of defensive starters, Rutgers lost their starting wide-outs, Pitt lost RB Lesean McCoy, and West Virginia lost QB Pat White. South Florida has QB Matt Grothe who may be the best quarterback in the conference. George Selvie is a beast on the defensive side coming off the edge on the defensive line. I think with all their playmakers, they have a great chance to win the Big East.

Top 5 Heisman list:
1) Colt McCoy, QB-Texas
Colt McCoy

2) Tim Tebow, QB-Florida
3) Sam Bradford, QB-Oklahoma
4) Jahvid Best, RB-Cal
5) Jonathan Dwyer, RB-Georgia Tech

Great post. But, i think Tim Tebow will get the heisman again. Not, because he's better than McCoy... But, because Tebow's on the better team. You know how the voting agenda is in college football. It's the best player on the best team that gets the nod.

Oh yeah, I also give West Virginia the nod over South Florida for the Big East. Although fans think otherwise, I don't think losing Pat White will make too much of a difference.

I see where you're coming from Matt. It looks like a 3 horse race for the heisman between Tebow, McCoy, and Bradford. And your right, the heisman does usually go to the best player on the best team. But it's usually some politics involved also. Out of the three, McCoy is the only one who hasn't won one and if all of their stats are similar and Texas does well I think it's McCoy's to lose. However, we all know that Tebow is more than capable of winning also.

I honestly think the Big East is a toss-up. I went with South Florida because of their quarterback play and their defense. West Virginia will be good, but I really think Pat White made that team go. It will be interesting to watch how they do this season.

What up Mitike, Florida is in a tough conference and they also have to get through the SEC championship at the end of the year. If they can stay focused, I like their chances though.
Texas looks to be in even better position to run the table now with Oklahoma's injury situation.
