Lee Daniels is the first?

Lee Daniels Is First African-American Nominated To Directors Guild.

Breaking through a long-standing color barrier, "Precious" director Lee Daniels is the first African-American to be nominated for the Directors Guild of America's best director award.

(UPH) The story of Precious was just as compelling enough to have a mediocre director...I'm not knocking him but, the book was a lot stronger than the motion picture.

Daniels did a great job but, I'm just wondering why no other black directors have been nominated prior to him.  I think Hollywood is responsible for this long-standing barrier.   Is it just me or do you think that no other directors prior to Daniels deserved this acknowledgment?
