"Deadbeat" Screening - Short Movie

Deadbeat (Dad)

Produced for the BET lens on talent filmmaker competition...

(the movie premiere)

(Kim Jackson ) - Some days it's hard to find good quality entertainment when you're really craving it. Other days it's surprising to find that same quality by chance. This happened to me just the other night when I was invited to a movie premiere.

The crowd was first entertained by two previous short films from the writer and directors of DIM Productions, but it was all about the night's feature film "Deadbeat". I was drawn into the story of a father of two beautiful little girls; skillfully written by Anthony McHie. This father, well portrayed by Khalid Robinson, seemed to revel in that fact that he was, in fact, a deadbeat dad. He was very forthcoming in sharing that information upon meeting women and even had a photo of himself with the words Deadbeat Dad blazed across it. Something that the love interest, also well portrayed by Pam Smith, took notice of. However, during their planned dinner date, he explains that it is not his desire to be a deadbeat and that there are plans in place to rectify this situation. Something that would be pleasing to his daughters' mother; who limits visitations due to lack of support. And as you're getting involved and engrossed in the storyline…it takes a turn. The father is kidnapped, beaten, and tortured; for reasons unbeknownst to him. It turns out that his dinner date and the father’s kidnapper are partners. Social workers who take their jobs to the limit. They forcibly want the father to immediately take action; to stop being such a deadbeat.

I won't spill all of the beans about the movie, but you understand why I was so thoroughly entertained. Anthony McHie and Bola Mustapha, the directors of DIM Productions, have an engaging and must see short film on their hands. This film takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions; from surprise to shock and ultimately sadness. I only wished there was more to see. With this in mind; I can’t wait to see what other gems DIM Productions create in the future. I'm sure I, as well as the rest of the audience, will be just as entertained when they do.

Pictures from that night...
