Is Affirmative Action still relevant today?

(UPH) - Joseph C. Phillips makes some strong points about the ineffectiveness of affirmative action.  Instead of it being beneficial, he believes it to be more damaging to a race's ability to compete.  His point that preferential treatment instills a feeling of being less than capable doesn't exactly hold water in my book.  I'm sure that many have felt that they were capable of achievement but, not so privileged with the same amount of opportunities.

He describes the program as being more related to "racial preference" than affirmative action.  I myself have benefited from these programs as well as many of you.  Maybe Mr. Phillips has the illusion that the playing fields are even now and we don't need intervention.  He also failed to offer a solution for affirmative action.  If the program are no longer beneficial then what is?

With that being said, do you agree with his claims?
