This Week in Ignorance Part 2
Did anyone see last weekend's All-Star Festivities? I have to ask because I figured once I saw the participants; that it would be lackluster at best, until we got to the All-Star game itself.
I think I proved myself correct. The celebrity game saw Rapper/Actor Common, breaking down the defense like he was being recruited, while the Globetrotters were up to their same antics. The Rookie-Sophomore Game saw DeJuan Blair go for a Barbara Walter night (20/20: 22 pts, 23 rebs) in the game, while Tyreke Evans garnished MVP honors. All Russell Westbrook did was go for 40 pts in a losing effort.
Congrats Paul Pierce, you're the best shooter in the league! You finished dead last in this event a couple years ago, now you're #1. I'm not taking away from what he did.
He redeemed himself (as he REALLY needed to do), and won. The only problem I have with him winning is; who's the best shooter on the Boston Celtics roster?
Now, on to Nate Robinson. He's the first 3 time Slam Dunk Champ. Don't get me wrong, the young sir can jump. But is he the best dunker in the league? And will he be remembered as the 1st 3-time winner? Speaking of which, does anyone know where I can find Craig Hodges?
Ok, people the moment we waited for ALL weekend, The 2010 NBA All-Star Game. This week it was more known for who was not going to play, rather than who was playing. No Kobe, Iverson, Shaq, Brandon Roy, and other snubs who people felt should've been on the team. Some said it lacked star power. But a record 108,000 people showed up and filled up Cowboy Stadium in Dallas.
The game ended in a 141-139 win for the East All-Stars as Carmelo Anthony missed a 3 pointer at the buzzer. Dwyane Wade was named MVP, while Chris Bosh sealed the game sinking 2 free throws late. Lebron James had a great game, and Carmelo paced the West All-Stars with 27 pts. What's the significance of all of this? All 4 stars were in the Top 5 draft picks of the 2003 NBA Draft. Some argue that this will go down in history as the best draft class ever, but I got another more important question for all of the urbanpeephole fans.
Who is the best basketball player on the planet? You can only have one. I don't need top 5's or if he wasn't injured or contract is too big. I just need one answer. One player and the reason why he or she (Maya Moore and Candace Parker can beat some of these dudes) is the best player. Who ya wit?

it's still kobe.
defense counts.

Winston,
Kobe is the best on planet? He wasn't the leader on the Olympic Gold Medal Team. But state your case as to why he's the best. Not just because of defense. Bruce Bowen had D.

Bruce Bowen is a "one-trick pony". Kobe is like a white unicorn with wings compared to the competition.
He's the best hands down.

kobe absolutely was the leader on the olympic team. in fact, when lebron and d-wade upped their games (particularly defensively) last season, it was because they saw how hard kobe worked EVERY day. in fact, he almost did himself a disservice by showing them how to get better.
you can make the argument that lebron is better than kobe offensively, but they're close enough that it's pretty much a wash. defensively though? it's kobe, hands down. i know that lebron gets all of the cool "caught you from behind" blocks, but that's the bulk of his defensive game. kobe doesn't do that because you're not gonna get past him in the first place. if he wants to lock you down, he WILL lock you down. i don't think you can say that about lebron (carmelo anthony just lit him up for 40 points last night).
now, kobe isn't asked to do that all game, every night. but watch the last five or six minutes of a close game. kobe's gonna be on the best scorer.
and he's gonna shut him down.

No doubt that kobe looks good. But look at his supporting cast. It is much better than what the others have around them. So when Kobe is one on one w/the other teams best scorer, he doesn't have to worry about the other 4 guys getting off either. If you really believe that Kobe made everyone else on that Olympic Team better alone, that's false. Kobe had to work harder than everyone on the team due to the fact that Wade got a title and was being considered a better player than kobe at that time. But again, that's a great argument. There is no right or wrong answer, but you're stating just b/c of his D puts him over everyone else in the world? Don't forget that Ginobili was hurt during the Olympics. He single handedly beat the US in 2006.

let's be honest... the answer is gonna come down to kobe or lebron. you can say that lebron is slightly better than kobe offensively, but kobe is WAY better lebron defensively. manu doesn't even come close. even at his peak, he wasn't the best player on the spurs. he doesn't even start for his team. i can probably name 30 players that are better manu at the moment.
as for kobe making the olympic players better? yep. i'm absolutely saying that. and that's not random babbling. the players said so themselves. kobe wasn't working hard at the olympics to hold of lebron and d-wade. he was working hard because that's what he does. it was normal for him. people wrote stories on this stuff. i'm not just making it up.

I agree that kobe is the man now. but, he's had more time to develop than Lebron. We're looking at lebron and kobe at two different points of the career. maybe that opens the door to the question of who's the better player after their sixth season?? i don't think that supporting cast (team-mates) should be a factor in this debate. Reason being is that I don't think that kobe would have won those previous titles without shaq. In the next couple of years we definitely won't be saying that kobe is way better than lebron on defense in a couple of years.

Man, I don't care what y'all talkin bout. all Im hearing is kobe vs lebron. This ain't a nike commercial and I ain't no puppet. Last I checked, kobe has 1 ring (without shaq) and lebron 0. so if this is a 2 horse race, we need to go back to the stables. D.Wade has the 1 ring, but his olympic performance was better than kobe's b/c he was coming off injury during the season and on top of that, he was coming off the bench a majority of the time. the Heat have the least of talent out of all 3 of the guys mentioned, yet they are still in the playoff hunt. If kobe or lebron were on that team, i can't say the same. and did anyone see lebron's triple double that hadn't been done in like 40 yrs and HE STILL LOST and has the BETTER TEAM? on top of that, HE GAVE UP 40. When kobe scored 81, did he give up 25? And did you see who hit the game winner? and in who's face? but he's not one of the ponies in this race right? ok i'll take the commercials and endorsements over wins, that's fine. Whatever you guys want to say, I'll believe it. Yea I know, Durant can't play either.
