In My Mind 08/17/10

So Brett Favre announced last week that he's played his last game of football and is retiring from the NFL. I don't believe that for one second. He does this every season. He's a media whore. Retire or make a commitment to the team man. The truth of the matter is...he just doesn't like training camp. And if I were a player for the Minnesota Vikings, I wouldn't feel too good about that. On one hand, yeah he's a hall of fame quarterback, holds multiple NFL records, and is still a very effective quarterback, even over the age of 40. How do you just skip training camp like it doesn't matter. It sends the wrong message. As a leader, it's important to set the tone and lead by example. Even though he can still make an impact in this league, if I was a fellow player, I don't know how much respect I would have for the guy. Brett Favre is like a boxer, he can leave the game...but is never really retired. Stay tuned...

I want to congratulate both the 2010 NFL and NBA Hall of Fame classes. I took a lot of notice in these classes because these were some of the guys I watched as I grew up. I wasn't the biggest Emmitt Smith fan, but the numbers don't lie. He's the all-time leading rusher in NFL history and he'll probably hold that record for a long time. The reason I say that is because, teams in the NFL nowadays have multiple backs on their roster that split carries. It not that many guys that carry the ball 30-40 times like Emmitt did back when he played with Dallas.

I was happy to see my man Jerry Rice finally get in there also. Maybe the hardest working football player I've ever seen. His work ethic was second to no one. I don't think Jerry Rice was born great, I think he made himself great through hard work and dedication. Wasn't the biggest guy, or the fastest guy...but he got the job done. Over and over again.

As far as the NBA class, you have perhaps the greatest role player ever in Scottie Pippen. At 6'7, He did everything. Handled the ball, rebounded, defended, and could give you 20 points a game as well. I don't know how many rings Michael Jordan would have gotten without "Pip". He was that important.

Karl Malone was scoring machine at power forward. Not only did he put up big numbers, but he was very consistent through out his career. It's unfortunate he didn't get to win a title, but he played hard and was very respected in NBA circles.

I don't care what anybody says....The "Dream Team" was the best basketball team ever assembled. Period. There will never be another team like that.

Charles Barkley appeared to have had a few choice words over the weekend for Lebron James and his "decision" Barkley said it was a punk move. It was a punk move for him leaving Cleveland...it was a punk move for him to go to Dwayne Wade's team.....and it was a punk move to be dancing around the stage after he signed with the Heat. Lebron is starting to grow tired of his doubters and tweeted about how he was taking mental notes about people saying things about him and that he was going to remember everybody. Well seems as if Barkley isn't backing down. He said that he hopes he's one of the guys on James list and that he's "not hard to find"....that he's on T.V. everyday. Wow. Pretty tough words Chuck...

San Francisco running back Glen Coffee is retiring from the NFL at the age of 23. When I first saw this I was very surprised. He seemed to be playing well and was the back-up to the often injured Frank Gore. But at the end of the day, I guess some guys have it in them, and some don't. At least he was truthful with the coaches and staff and didn't waste their time. I wish the man the best of luck.

Former USC running back Stafon Johnson can't seem to catch a break. Everybody knows about the unfortunate incident back in college when he was lifting weights and the weight bar fell on his neck and crushed his vocal cords. He couldn't talk for months and doctors even said the thing that saved him was the fact that he was a football player and had a very strong neck. Fast forward to now, playing for the Tennessee Titans, he dislocated his ankle in a pre-season game and may be out for the year. The injury was so gruesome, that Titans head coach Jeff Fisher actually thought that Johnson's shoe came off the way his foot flopped around so loosely. Stefon seems like a good guy and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Former McDonalds All-American. Indiana's "Mr. Basketball" in 1991. National player of the year and #1 draft pick in the 1994 NBA draft. That player is Glen "Big Dog" Robinson. What happened to him?? This dude was a scoring machine. Wasn't the best defender, but could score in a variety of ways. He was hobbled throughout his career by injuries and was last seen in 2005 as a role player for the San Antonio Spurs. Where ever you are...I hope all is well brotha.

I know we talk a lot of sports on this blog, but I just wanted to jump off subject for a quick second. I would like to get your thoughts about Obama and his approval of building a Mosque a few blocks from "ground zero" in Manhattan. A Mosque is a place of worship for Muslims and everyone knows that the people of Al-Queda that are responsible for the 9/11 attacks were Muslim. Many people have been very outspoken about this topic and I've heard a lot of different opinions, so here's mine...
I don't have a problem with it. You have a right to freedom of religion. It may come off as a little bit sensitive to certain people, especially those who've had loved ones affected by the terrorist attacks. But my opinion is that you can't lump all Muslims into one bucket. All Muslims aren't terrorists. What if a guy goes into a school and shoots everybody, but just so happens to come from a Christian background. Maybe he got high or drunk and just made a bad decision. Should that make you look at Christians differently? Can you not have a church with a cross out front a few blocks from the school? Just some food for thought. I'm interested to know your opinion. Till next time folks.

I heard what Barkeley said over the radio. I dont think that there will be a reply from Lebron. Charles pretty much called him out and punked him in the same breath.

He sure did. I know Barkley is always outspoken, but he went pretty hard on him this time. The best thing Lebron should do is just be quiet and play basketball.

I just heard that he made a response to Barkley's comment. He is wasting his time paying attention to everyone. He's already getting sucked in... You're right, he just needs to play ball and stay out of the media.

playing ball won't shut them up. You gotta win a title and all will be forgotten. Maybe win 2 to shut them completely up.

Fat chance... Miami may luck up and win one. But, they would never win two. Wade would have to play a true point guard for that to happen. And you KNOW that aint about to happen. Lack of chemistry will be their demise. Lebron and company will be remembered for all of the wrong reasons.
