Athletes also have to deal with short pockets...

Beloved, we are gathered here today to discuss a topic where all involved will have an opinion.

Athletic Finances and how they are being used.

I had a discussion with at least 5 people last week concerning finances of athletes in various sports and the consensus was that these athletes aren’t being taught about finances and/or how to properly handle them once they receive that “First Big Check.”

The outcome of this discussion spawned a totally different topic. Ultimately we came to, how do we change the mindset of these young men as they are elevated into a new realm of financial responsibility?

Case in point: Antoine Walker. Please see video to understand where we’re coming from.

This man seems like all of his intentions were good and we’ve heard much worse. The list of athletes in his situation goes on and on from Allen Iverson, Kenny Anderson, Derrick Coleman, Latrell Sprewell, etc… We’ll be here all day trying to list names, but they are all in a worse position than MC Hammer was 10 yrs ago.

So who’s responsible? What are some suggestions on how we change that mindset, equip these young men (I say young because they start in these leagues are early as 19), and what measures can we take to improve their quality of financial stability? They are supposed to leave an inheritance for their kids and grandchildren, but can’t even take care of themselves.

Please send in your comments, we can’t wait to hear your responses.
