Not your typical circus...OVO-Cirque du Soleil

(UPH) - I experienced "Ovo" from Cirque du Soleil for the first time this weekend and believe that I had my first eyegasm...  For those of you in Atlanta who have not had the opportunity to check out one of the many circus dramas from Cirque du Soleil…please do so before the last show ends on January 2nd.  Imagine a circus reinvented with no animals and a story line comparable to that of an opera.   The acrobats, foot-juggling, contortionists, high flying aerials, and continuous live music were all complementary to this on-stage performance.  Prepare to have your head on a swivel.

Ovo, which is Portuguese for "egg", looks at the world of insects and its diverse interactions of their life cycle.  A mysterious egg appears in the midst of insects characters and causes them to become mesmerize from this iconic object.  The dynamic relationships will definitely motivate spectators to choose a character to root for.  I definitely got my money worth with the theatrical production alone unlike many who critque Ovo as not being as entertaining as the other 20 something stage performances from Cirque du Soleil.  There could have been more death defying stunts but, I truly welcomed the balance of drama within this performance.

The live Brazilian music and dance performances were subtle and not distracting at all to overall show.  The performers periodically drew the audience in with their comedic antics that were well timed.  As far as seating, they weren't many bad seats in the house as the stage was raised approx 6 feet.  But, I would NOT recommend purchasing higher priced seats near the front stage or the lower price tickets near the back corners of the stage.  The middle section seats in the front and sides have the best viewing angles as well as decent prices.  Also please note, that cameras and cellphones are not allowed during the performances to protect their copyright.

All in all, I recommend at least trying this show once.  It is perfect for a family outing or a date.  Don't worry…the show is kid friendly but, not kid centered.  If you are already a Cirque du Soleil fan, I'm sure that you are currently making plans to scratch off the remaining 20 themed shows that are touring around the world.
