Who says that Luck is the #1 Draft Pick?

UPH - I'm just going to cut to the chase on this one and call "bull" on Andrew Luck being the #1 projected quarterback selected in the 2011 NFL draft.  I've listened to the sports media circus place this guy on an elite pedestal...and I must say that their projections are tilted to say the least.  It's really a weak argument to even say that Luck is a better quarterback than Heisman trophy winner Cam Newton.

For the record, my statements have nothing to do with off the field accusations against Newton or the perceived integrity of Luck.  Besides, I only measure what happens on the field when it comes to calling someone the best player.   There is no question that Cam Newton should be selected first if he declares himself eligible for the draft.  Don't get me wrong, Andrew Luck is a more accurate passer based on this season's stats.  But, his dink and dunk (short) passes are the real reason that he has a higher completion percentage.  Can we say misleading?  If you ask me, this comes down to the backlash of Cam Newton's off the field controversy and has little to do with a true comparison of the best quarterbacks in college football.

Let's do our own comparison here with the raw stats (taken from ESPN)...

Passing Stats

Running Stats
Andrew Luck??

Did the sports media overlook Cam Newton's passer rating?  Or, that Newton has same amount of touchdowns with far fewer pass attempts than Luck?  Sure...Andrew Luck's pass completion is higher by 3% but, he has thrown for nearly the same amount of passes as Newton has completed (with only 400 more yards to show for it).  I'm not even going to speak about the running stats comparison between the two..Smh.

For the record, I'm not convinced that Andrew Luck is even better than Arkansas' Ryan Mallett.  But, that is another article on another day....

Case Closed.
