What we learned from last night...

(UPH) - On the night of January 10th, most of us watched the top two teams in college football compete until the very last second.  With that being said, everyone should now be aware that the Auburn Tigers defeated the Oregon Ducks 22-19.  That is...unless you live under a rock or happen to dislike college football.  But, our purpose here is to recap the overlooked rather than repeat the obvious.  In this segment, I will run down a few items that we learned from last night's game...

  • This was by far Cam Newton's worse game this season but, most would judge his playing ability off of this one game.  It is what it is....
  • Cam Newton seems to play hurt a lot better than Colt McCoy did last year.  Take that comment however you want to take it.
  • People seem to be short-minded about the fact that a sound defense can slow down any high powered offense.  I saw a great defensive performance from both teams.
  • Contrary to belief, Oregon's offense was not over-hyped this season.  They just got out schemed when they tried to run a spread offense in a goal line situation.  It doesn't work against a physical defensive line in short yardage situations.  They just lost the chess game.
  • I seem to keep hearing how Oregon let the game slip away with missed opportunities...  As, if they were blind to the two opportunities that Auburn missed to score. Or, maybe they closed their eyes when Oregon either chose to fake punt or go for it on fourth down repeatedly.  I would say that Oregon did everything possible to keep the game close.
  • Was Coach Kelly playing Madden out there?  Must I repeat, going for it on 4th down time after time?  When a team is losing, this type of play calling normally is a sign that you don't trust your defense or special teams.
  • The slippery wet grass prevented either team from having a lateral speed advantage.  This was an epic FAIL by the grounds crew.  That watered grass affected the game just as much as the TV timeouts.  Whose idea was that anyway?
  • Auburn proved that they belonged in the BCS Championship game as a team.  Dyer had the game of his life and Fairley proved why he is the number one defensive lineman in college football.  Their defense as a unit played a great game with the exception of a couple of plays.  All of this was accomplished without having to depend on the heroics of Cam Newton.
  • How do the sports media get away with predicting a shoot out when the history of championship games suggests otherwise?  And how did most football spectators fall victim to all of the built up suspense?  This game featured two of the closest match teams that I have seen in a while.  We all know that history repeats itself but, we always seem to hope for a different outcome.
  • Lastly.  Even if you are in denial and hate the SEC...you can't argue with the numbers.  It is what it is...
