This Week in Ignorance 3/6/11-3/13/11 pt. 1

Nfl Lockout Negotiations Last Day

UPH Fans,

I'm going to focus on sports for this week in ignorance.

I should warn you, each of these things will probably change the way you view sports.

If not, they'll at least give you a new perspective.

First things First! The NFL Lockout

Unable to decide how to split $9 Billion!

Excuse me, did you say Billion?

YES, $9 BILLION AMERICAN DOLLARS!

The NFL Players Association and the Owners decide to Lockout Players from all team facilities. This includes, no benefits for non-injured players and families (players injured during previous season are still covered, but not families), No paychecks for players, no roster moves for any team (free agent signing, trades, contract extensions). The only thing that will be completed will be the NFL draft, but none of the rookies can be signed.

So what now? The NFLPA is "essentially" (not really) no longer. Each player will now sue the NFL for Anti-Trust and breach of contract and go after them legally. The Owners and the NFL don't want that because now it's personal! And who really wants to work for a boss who isn't paying them the money which they are contractually obligated to pay out?

Previously, Owners take home $1 Billion and players salaries are split with the $8 Billion.

League has team salary caps. Players and teams get incentives year over year. TV deals are through the roof.

Who wins?

NOBODY! Fans, TV, Players, and Owners. Each of which are selfish in their own right. But bottom line: EVERYBODY LOSES!

  • Our national economy is probably in the worst state that it's ever been in since the Great Depression and now thousands of employees are out of work. Not just players. What about the parking lot attendants? Concession stand owners, T-shirt makers, even ticket scalpers? Memorabilia companies could go out of business
  • TV on Sunday and Monday will be lost completely as networks don't have anything to put in those slots. On Sunday's, other networks place infomercials and religious shows during football hours to pass the time until the Simpsons come on.
  • Kids. With dreams of making it to the NFL, what do you tell your child when he says I want to be a football player and at anytime, you can be unemployed because people with money can't determine how you should be paid over the next five years. When they are 21 with no job experience, fresh out of college, in a bad economy. Not to mention that the avg. career is 3.5 years and all contracts are non-guaranteed anyway
Which players attended the negotiations w/the NFLPA's best interest at heart? How's bout this list: Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, and Jeff Saturday, just to name a few. I'm glad that they went, but those guys have money and contracts are so big that a few months won't hurt their pockets. Not one draft eligible player or agent had a say so. And Owners are rich already, what do they care about a man who sells popcorn for a living with the intentions of feeding his wife and 3 kids?

In a league where the NFLPA Executive Director, DeMaurice Smith is a black man. I'm saying about 60-65% of the players are black. (Maybe more, but I didn't research that) And 100% of the Owners are not black, does race play an issues?

SaturdayWe've told them, 'Don't go out and buy a new boat. Don't go out and buy a new car. Pay off whatever debts you have.' These are things we've been learning from history.

This is too ignorant to comment on. Your turn to do it for me!
