Happy Memorial Day

With The UPH Staff

It is not widely known that the first known observance of Memorial Day was in Charleston, South Carolina in 1865; freedmen (freed enslaved Africans) celebrated at the Washington Race Course, today the location of Hampton Park where hundreds of Union soldiers were laid to rest, and each year thereafter. At the gravesite, labeled "Martyrs of the Race Course" on May 1, 1865; graves were decorated, speeches were made, and picnics were enjoyed. This ‘Decoration Day’ later became Memorial Day in remembrance of all soldiers fallen in battle.

What is widely known about this holiday and its traditions is that it has become a marker for the beginning of summer. For Nascar fans, it has become a marker for the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600.  It has become a look forward to the three day weekend. But, you know something else it has become? It has become a resurgence of the holiday itself. On Memorial Day, we not only remember the fallen.

But, we pray for the soldiers that are fighting for our freedoms today. And we thank God, when they have returned to us alive and well.

So today, we here at UPH would like to extend our gratitude and support in remembrance of all soldiers…past, present, and the brave men and women that will be choosing to stand strong for our country and its citizens.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day.
